Cellular phones are owned by just about everyone. Whether they are CDMA or GSM Cell phones, they have become lifelines for a lot of people. They wouldn’t know what to do without it. But for some reason the proper etiquette when using cellular phones is still not common knowledge.
What if you are at a business power lunch with a potential client and the phone rings? Are you going to answer it? Do you think the client would have an issue with you talking and they’re using their time to meet with you? How would that look for you? Why can’t you just turn the phone off or put it on vibrate? Here are some basic cell phone etiquette do’s and don’ts that you can use:
Do turn off your phone so that you won’t be interrupted. If you are meeting with someone, the last thing you want to do is have the phone ringing and then answer it. You have wasted time with a potential client and they will note that as being rude. Either turn off the phone or put it in the vibrate position.
Do take the call if it’s emergency. If you know in advance, that’s even better. If it’s not urgent, allow the person to leave a message on your voice mail system. The person can wait until you have finished your business.
Do wait for the appropriate moment to check any cell phone calls you may have missed. If you are the only one at the table, you can check for messages. However, if you do have to return a call quickly, excuse yourself and let the party know what you’re doing. Also let them know that you will be back in a few minutes.
Don’t allow cellular phones to constantly ring. That is not only rude, but also annoying. Who wants to keep hearing your phone ring when they are trying to take care of business. There are times when you may forget to turn off the ringer. If that happens, quickly turn it off, using the buttons on the outside.
If you are in a meeting, you should not take any personal calls. This is also very rude and shows that you have no respect for the other people in the meeting.
Don’t even think about multi-tasking while you are on the phone. If you are shopping or going to the bank, you need to pay attention to what you are doing. You can end up messing up your transactions if you are on the phone. You need to focus on one thing at a time. Plus, there are some places that will not serve you if you are on the cell phone.
Cellular phones are a great convenience, but knowing when and when not to use one can take you a long way.
